Environment

Caring for the environment is a constant concern for CAP Group. Therefore, we fully comply with the applicable environmental legislation and the agreements that we have voluntarily signed.

CAP Group intends to be recognized for its strategy focused on decarbonization, so its operating companies will work towards reducing emissions and mitigating actions against climate change.

CLIMATE CHANGE

CAP Group has acknowledged the challenge
of managing the risks and opportunities
posed by climate change, according to
the recommendations of the TCFD.

Governance

In 2022, the various aspects related to climate change were addressed in the Group’s instances of corporate governance. Both when reporting the management of operations as well as in the continuous task of supervising strategic risks, aspects such as the measurement of carbon and water footprint and the importance of an adequate climate change management were addressed.

Strategy

In 2021, a new Corporate Risk Management Framework was implemented. It evaluates the risks identified based on their probability of happening and their expected impact: economic, reputational, environmental, and on people.

Risk
Management

Risk management at CAP Group, including those of a climatic nature, is conducted within the common risk management framework. In 2022, the Board approved the incorporation of the “environment and climate change” risk dimension.

Metrics and
objectives

Based on its carbon footprint baseline measure in 2020, CAP Group has defined a target of reducing its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 24% by 2030.

Emissions

CAP Group's Sustainable Growth Strategy is based on the decarbonization of both its processes and the industries that use its products.

Water

To promote the sustainable management of the water resource through the production of desalinated water, thus contributing to reducing water stress in the north of the country. The priority is to look for alternatives to reduce the use of continental water.

Main Figures

75, megaliters of water collected.

% of the Group's water consumption is obtained from continental sources

Waste

Steel is one of the most recyclable products on the planet and can be reused infinite times when it is made from iron ore. That is why CAP Group is permanently seeking circular economy projects, both with internally generated waste as well as those of our clients, which can be useful in other processes.

Main Figures

373, tons of waste generated

Energy

Energy management is essential for the reduction of emissions and CAP Group's decarbonization strategy. Currently, operating companies are looking for solutions to incorporate NCREs or reduce energy consumption.

Main Figures

25,257, GJ energy consumed

Biodiversity

Protection of biodiversity around the Group’s facilities, operating with the utmost respect for the mitigation hierarchy principle, in which we prioritize the avoidance of any negative impact on biodiversity.

MAGNETITE PLANT

This plant extracts iron ore from copper tailings (with a high iron content), coming from Mina Candelaria, and constitutes the largest mining recycling project in the country, and one of the largest worldwide - an example of circular economy and a sustainable operation. In 2022, this project processed 17 million metric tons of Candelaria mine tailings.

RECIRCULATION IN CSH

Currently, 57.3% of the water used by the operating company is recycled and, in 2022, it identified projects with the greatest water recirculation potential for the next 7 years.
